Introduction
For over a century, the name "Ceylon" has been synonymous with the world's finest tea. While the country changed its name to Sri Lanka in 1972, its most famous export retained the colonial title, a brand recognized globally for quality and character. From the misty heights of Nuwara Eliya to the tropical lowlands of Galle, the island's diverse climate produces a remarkable variety of flavors. As a registered inbound tour operator based in the heart of the tea country, Pearl Lanka Tours invites you to explore the origins of your morning cup.
The Birth of an Industry: James Taylor and Loolecondera
The story of Ceylon Tea began in 1867 with a Scotsman named James Taylor. Before tea took root, Sri Lanka was famous for its coffee. However, a devastating fungal disease known as "coffee rust" wiped out the plantations in the 1860s. Taylor, staying at the Loolecondera Estate near Kandy, experimented with a new crop: Camellia sinensis, the tea plant.
He planted 19 acres of tea and set up a rudimentary processing factory on the estate verandah. His success proved that the hill country's cool, humid climate was perfect for tea cultivation. Today, you can still visit the Loolecondera Estate to see Taylor’s original tea patch and the seat where he surveyed his domain.
The Seven Tea Growing Regions
Just as wine has terroir, the taste of Ceylon Tea changes depending on the altitude and soil where it is grown. The Sri Lanka Tea Board recognizes seven distinct agro-climatic regions, each producing a unique brew.
1. Nuwara Eliya (High Grown)
Known as the "Champagne of Teas," this region produces the lightest and most refined tea. Grown at the highest elevations (over 6,000 feet), the cool air and slow growth result in a delicate, golden infusion with a floral bouquet.
Experience it: Our Tea Country & Coastal Luxury tour includes a stay in Nuwara Eliya, allowing you to taste this exquisite tea at its source.
2. Dimbula (High Grown)
Located between Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains, Dimbula estates produce a "high grown" tea known for its full body and refreshing mellowness. During the dry season, the cool winds create a tea with distinct notes of jasmine and cypress.
3. Uva (Medium Grown)
The remote Uva province is famous for its exotic, aromatic flavor. The unique climate, affected by both the northeast and southwest monsoons, stresses the tea bushes just enough to produce a distinct mentholated character that is prized by connoisseurs.
4. Kandy (Medium Grown)
This is where the industry began. Kandy teas are "mid-grown" and produce a strong, full-bodied liquor with a coppery tone. It is ideal for those who enjoy a robust cup of tea with milk.
5. Ruhuna and Sabaragamuwa (Low Grown)
In the southern lowlands, the tea bushes grow rapidly in the warm, fertile soil. These regions produce "low grown" teas, characterized by beautiful black leaves and a strong, rich flavor. These teas are favorites in the Middle East for their strength and thickness.
The Symbol of Quality: The Lion Logo
When buying Ceylon Tea, discerning drinkers look for the "Lion Logo" on the packaging. This symbol is not just a decoration; it is a certification of purity owned by the Sri Lanka Tea Board. To carry this logo, the tea must meet strict criteria:
It must be 100% Pure Ceylon Tea (no blending with cheaper teas from other countries).
It must be grown, manufactured, and packed entirely in Sri Lanka.
It must conform to rigorous quality standards.
Health Benefits of Ceylon Tea
Beyond its taste, Ceylon Tea is a wellness beverage. It is rich in antioxidants called flavonoids, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Sri Lanka is also recognized by the Montreal Protocol as producing "Ozone Friendly Tea," meaning the industry has eliminated the use of ozone-depleting substances in cultivation.
